A former star of MTV’s Jackass, Bam Margera, is reportedly heading back to rehab after his most recent attempts to get himself cleaned up were unsuccessful.
Margera has tried multiple stints in rehab, but they were not the fix he needed to overcome his substance issues. Margera reportedly left the last facility because they denied him use of his cellphone, which he apparently wanted to communicate with his son.
Margera said he felt he needed to keep in touch with his son for the sake of his own mental health. He also said he needed to keep in touch with his wife, and “answer important calls with important people.”
He’s headed back for good reason. Margera was arrested at the Lux Hotel in Los Angeles after he was asked to leave the property and refused. This was right after he’d left rehab, and met with Dr. Phil McGraw. Margera claimed he needed Phil’s help, and even posted a video asking for it.
At the hotel, Margera was stopped by a security guard who made a citizen’s arrest and held the troubled TV personality until police arrived. Margera’s parents said he was having a breakdown, and they were hanging in with him amid the drama.
Now 39-years-old, Margera was a TV personality for well over a decade even though his claims to fame went off the air long ago. After his time on Jackass, he got his own show – Viva la Bam, and later Bam’s Unholy Union. Known for being a fearless stuntman, a versatile videographer, and a talented skateboarder, Margera rose to fame as a result of his insane pranks and destructive personality.
The destructive tendencies he and his friends had were manifested in the worst possible way in 2011 when Ryan Dunn perished in a car accident while driving over the speed limit and under the influence of alcohol. Dunn was a cast member on Jackass and Viva la Bam and was Margera’s best friend since childhood. Margera has openly stated Dunn’s death caused him to fall deeper into alcoholism.
Margera has had short periods of success over his vices. After a stint in rehab starting in January 2018, he was sober for seven months. He’d later relapse after he was robbed at gunpoint during a trip to Colombia.
His latest tirade saw him criticize his mother April, wife Nikki, and childhood friend Brandon Novak. Margera’s downward spiral is sad to watch, especially by those who remember him when he was a joyous individual having the time of his life. While someone who has had such a wild life is likely to cling to substances at points, many wonder whether his plummet can be reversed.
There is hope – just consider his former Jackass castmate, Steve O. After a lifestyle of insane stunts and drug abuse, Steve O was able to get completely clean and has expressed well wishes for his friend.
Can Margera turn his life around? Will more rehab, or Dr. Phil, be able to help him?
