Super Mario Odyssey may be receiving widespread praise and causing the Nintendo Switch to fly off shelves, but Mario isn’t the only gaming character poised for a modern resurgence.
Mega Man, or Rock Man as he is known in Japan, will be featured in a new game which is scheduled to hit stores in late 2018. Though the series has many spin offs and tie-in series, the main series has ten entries. The eleventh was announced recently, when a trailer was posted.
The game features the classic side-scrolling, platforming gameplay fans of the series love, along with the diverse combat abilities that made the character himself famous. The game will also be visually impressive even for the modern era, featuring a hand-drawn art style.
The Mega Man series has sold over thirty million copies worldwide, featuring over 50 games altogether on multiple generations of console. The first one to make it to America was the self-titled port on the Nintendo Entertainment System back in 1987.
The game featured the title character navigating through a robotic world and facing off against enemies with various weapons. After defeating robot masters, which function as bosses, he would be able to use their weapons. This gave the gamer the option of multiple play styles and weapons, adding replay value and the thrill of finding a particular boss’s weakness – a strategy that has been required repeatedly throughout the series.
The series had a half-dozen games on the NES, before moving to the next generation of consoles. The Mega Man X series launched on Super Nintendo in 1993, offering better graphics, new combat abilities, and more playable characters. The series was also popular enough to find its way onto handheld consoles, and even got a TV series.
When the gaming industry leaped to the third dimension, the Mega Man series did the same. A 3D action game, titled Mega Man Legends, came to the PlayStation in 1997. Mega Man entered the RPG genre on with Mega Man Battle Network on Game Boy Advance.
A fan-funded game called Mighty No. 9, featured members of the Mega Man development team and attempted to recapture the magic of the famous series, which was one of Capcom’s best sellers for decades. However, the result was met with mixed reviews. Many people cited glitches and bugs, as well as problems with the game’s voice acting and story. Though the art-style is similar, it failed to become the modern successor to the famous series.
Mega Man 11’s visual style bears somewhat of a resemblance to the recent hit Cuphead. Though this game’s art was influenced by the style from the 1950s, it was also drawn by hand.
The character has also been featured in the Marvel vs. Capcom fighting game series, and even made appearances in the Street Fighter and Super Smash Brothers series.
Mega Man remains one of Capcom’s most popular and highest-grossing franchises to this day, ranking high alongside the likes of Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, and many more.
