The Walking Dead may be nearing a return to TV with the beginning of season 9B rolling around. But despite the looming TV continuation of the super-creepy Whisperer story arc, there’s another update that may mean as much or more to some fans.
The Walking Dead “Our World” is a mobile game built around the growing augmented reality (AR) craze. AR has proven to be a formula for success among mobile gamers, taking advantage of their platform’s portability and transportability.
Mixing in the Walking Dead universe was sure to make it even more alluring, and now people around the world rescue survivors, battle infestations, and claim rewards while fighting alongside their favorite zombie-slaying brethren from the show and comic.
Even late last year, the game was pulling in millions only a couple months after launch. Hot off the heels of the first major special event, the winter Frostbite event, the game started a new season, making it the first new event of 2019 – unless one counts the Shotgun Rush event, undoubtedly meant to reward people who got the legendary Reclaimer shotgun during Frostbite season.
The game features a new loading screen with characters fist-bumping one another, and Eugene using his trademark jar of pickles as a projectile weapon against zombies – tell us how that works out, Dr. Porter.
Updates to the game include a revised tier system and the introduction of leaderboards. The interactive element of these games is a big part of their claim to fame. Letting teams see how they stack up against one another is a guaranteed way to make The Walking Dead: Our World a hit throughout 2019 and beyond.
The game did launch a special event during the change of seasons. Shotgun Rush sees players get a chance at the game’s other legendary shotgun, the Bulldozer, and utilizes its own limited-time currency in skull tokens.
Priest-turned-zombie-killer Father Gabriel will be joining the game for players level 18 and above, while the raider-killing Ranger sniper rifle is officially available as well. Players can get the rifle from high waves of bait, and the raider system in general has been completely overhauled. The leader system is no more, and players can now select their team via a clean interface with any four heroes they choose.
With the game’s half-year anniversary coinciding along the new season, one has to wonder just what could be next for the fast-growing game. Update 4.0 confirmed two new walker types will be coming in future special events. They also promised to make challenges a little more completable – mobile may lack a little room for creativity in some cases, but 1,000,000 headshots on a certain walker type is just too tough to pull off.
The return of the show may also pave the way for new additions. A better link between the two universes could help this budding title continue its rise and become one of the more popular mobile games, especially in the category of AR.
