The Walking Dead has suffered from losing many of its major stars – but it may just get one back.
The departure of Andrew Lincoln’s Rick Grimes and Chandler Riggs’s Carl Crimes was enough of a blow to send some fans away for good. When Lauren Cohan’s Maggie Rhee departed suddenly, admittedly without much explanation, it was yet another hard loss.
Cohan’s portrayal of Maggie had been a mainstay in the show since its second season. Warning – spoilers ahead.
Originally, her character was a farm girl who was naïve about the state of the walkers – like her father who was in the medical industry, she viewed them as sick people rather than dead people. She would ultimately be swayed to see what they really were after a close call, and she’d also find love by pairing up with the good-hearted go-getter, Glenn.
Maggie would remain one of the show’s major characters throughout several major story arcs, ultimately becoming the leader of the Hilltop Colony. When Glenn was killed at the hands (and bat) of Negan, Maggie would rally an army in an effort to avenge her husband.
At the war’s conclusion, Maggie was upset with Rick’s decision to spare Negan as a way of maintaining some form of peace with Negan’s remaining followers. She would ultimately try to end Negan’s life, but decide against it, then leave the show unceremoniously.
From a storyline perspective, her departure was explained to be in connection with the mysterious Georgie, who she’d been in contact with before, with the reasoning being she couldn’t stand to be in the area after what had happened. The real reason for the sudden exit was because Cohan was starring in another series, Whiskey Cavalier.
However, with that series now canceled, Cohan could very well be on her way back to The Walking Dead. If she doesn’t return to the show, she could easily make an appearance in one of the upcoming movies which will serve to expand The Walking Dead universe. However, we have to believe the showrunners will be begging to have another one of their main protagonists back in the fray.
Another reason for this is that the show will be seeing the departure of yet another one of its main protagonists in the form of Michonne, a character who debuted in the finale of season two and has been a mainstay ever since.
Michonne would ultimately become the love interest of Rick in a storyline that differed from that of their comic counterparts. The two would have a child, and Michonne would become the leader of Alexandria after the war. She remained a strong force both in combat and as a leader, effectively helping carry the communities through the battle with the Saviors and the Whisperers.
The show has plenty of secondary characters who are strong in their own right, but none could fill the void of a main character who has been around for years. Here’s to hoping Maggie makes a return.
