There’s a lot that can be said for people who nurture and pursue their passion from a young age. This can be said for Saraya-Jade Bevis, better known to wrestling fans across the world as Paige.
A former champion and a global superstar with fans in the UK, US, and many other nations across the globe, Paige has become one of the most popular female superstars on WWE’s roster. But despite being only 25-years-old, the young superstar recently received some heartbreaking news.
Paige was told that she would be forced to retire from her career as an active performer as a result of an injury she sustained at a live event.
Paige began her career in wrestling before she was born – her mother was participating in a match while she was unknowingly pregnant with the future superstar. From a famed wrestling family in England, Paige grew up learning the ropes of the business.
Despite having a big shadow to stand in, she quickly etched out her own identity, which effectively helped her differentiate herself from the other female superstars in the industry. Known for her boisterous personality, distinct appearance with dark hair and makeup, as well as a very versatile move set, she made her WWE debut in their developmental brand, NXT.
Paige became a champion early on, and won the main roster women’s title on her first night on said roster. Once she’d made the leap from developmental to TV, it was clear she was going to be one of the most popular stars on the roster.
While her long history in the industry gave her a plethora of experience, it also left her with some nagging injuries. Not only was she already suffering from scoliosis, but she was forced to take a lengthy break from WWE due to a neck injury.
During her time away, Paige was involved in a concerning relationship with fellow wrestling superstar and former WWE champion Alberto del Rio. The two made headlines multiple times, reportedly being involved in violent incidents with other people and even heated disputes between the two of them in public areas.
Many expressed concern for her wellbeing and future, with some claiming she should be released due to her behavior. But WWE kept Paige under contract, and brought her back to the company after she had received and recovered from surgery.
Paige reemerged as the leader of the stable Absolution, which included NXT call-ups Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville. The returning star was gaining traction again and picking up right where she’d left off. But a nasty incident at a live show led to a scary moment for Paige and all those in attendance.
After receiving a kick from behind by Sasha Banks, Paige fell to the canvas and appeared to struggle moving. Though it was initially reported as a stinger, subsequent reports state the injury was serious enough to warrant her retirement. It is uncertain whether she will move into a non-wrestling role with WWE in the future.
