Eric Arndt, better known to WWE fans as Enzo Amore, has recently been accused of raping a woman in a hotel room during October of last year.
It was originally reported that WWE had only suspended the superstar, but reports are now saying he has been released. The release comes just a week before he was scheduled to defend the cruiserweight championship against Cedric Alexander at the Royal Rumble.
The man known as Amore got his start in the WWE’s promotional brand, NXT. Functioning as a fast-talker in a tag team alongside towering partner Big Cass, Amore quickly because a household name with his colorful personality, distinguishing voice and appearance, as well as his list of catchphrases.
Amore and Cass made their debut on WWE’s main roster to much fanfare in 2016. However, the two were never able to recapture the success they had in developmental. Largely lost in the thicker roster of Monday Night Raw, the two had an uneventful run before eventually splitting up and going into singles competition.
Amore’s onscreen character was originally pitted as a babyface, with an angle attempting to get sympathy on him following his betrayal by his partner. However, his character continued to draw ire and this may have been a product of design. Some reports state he had problems with people backstage, and this snippet of reality may have been infused with his current character direction.
Despite rumors that he had fallen on bad graces, Amore found a new place for himself as a singles star on WWE’s 205 Live program, a brand/division hybrid that sees the superstars compete on Monday Night Raw as well as their own show exclusive to the WWE Network.
Amore’s run with the cruiserweight championship marked his biggest success since coming to the main roster. It is unknown when or if he will ever be seen in the WWE again. The woman who accused him has stated she has gone to the police, and officers confirmed an investigation was ongoing.
WWE has zero-tolerance policy for any issues involving domestic or sexual violence in any capacity. About a month ago, WWE superstar Rich Swann was suspended for attempting to force his girlfriend back into their car after they got into a verbal argument on the way back from one of her wrestling matches. Swann was originally slated to face Amore for the cruiserweight title at the Royal Rumble and was replaced by Alexander.
Some of Amore’s scripted encounters on WWE TV may hit a little too close to home given these allegations. During the end of his partnership with Cass, Amore participated in an angle where he went to meet WWE superstar Lana in a hotel room, and another where he was locked out of his own changing room naked.
WWE’s cruiserweight title scene is now more confusing than ever. Longtime champion Neville, who revitalized his character in the division, walked away from the company after reportedly being asked to drop the belt to Amore.
